Ask a Woodlands resident where to rent a kayak and most will name whichever boat house they tried first, as if there's only one. There are two, run by the same Township Recreation Division, listed on the same website, styled with the same swan-boat photography. But Riva Row Boat House on The Waterway and Lakes Edge Boat House at Hughes Landing put you on the water in completely different ways, and if you rent from the wrong one for what you actually want that afternoon, you'll spend half your hour finding out.
Riva Row has been the Town Center anchor since 2009, tucked along the canal across from Town Green Park. Lakes Edge came later, built in 2016 as what its own operator describes as a compact, kiosk-style satellite location out at Hughes Landing. Same rental fleet, same life jackets, same waiver process. The difference is what's directly in front of you when you push off the dock.
The first ten minutes are the whole story
At Riva Row, you launch into the canal. To reach the open water of Lake Woodlands, you paddle the length of the Waterway first, past the fountains, under the bridges, alongside Market Street. One reviewer who's used both spots put it plainly: Lakes Edge sets you right out on the lake, while Riva Row means paddling the entire canal before you're worn out enough to actually be on it.
At Lakes Edge, there's no warm-up. You're on open lake from your first stroke, with the option to fish (Lake Woodlands is catch and release), watch the sunset, or just point toward Restaurant Row and turn around when you're ready.
Neither approach is better. But they're not interchangeable, and most people assume they are until they've tried the one they didn't grow up using.
What an hour actually buys you
This matters more than it sounds like because both locations charge by the hour, and an hour means different things depending on where you start.
At Riva Row, the Township's own posted rates run $15 for the first hour on a single kayak and $20 for a tandem, with $5 for each additional hour. If you book one hour and you're new to the canal, expect to spend a real chunk of it just getting to the lake and back. Book two hours if the point of the trip is actually being on Lake Woodlands rather than touring the canal.
At Lakes Edge, that math doesn't apply. Every minute you pay for is lake time. When the Township added water bikes there for Memorial Day weekend in 2021, at $30 for the first hour and $5 per additional hour, it was rolling out a feature that had already proven itself at Riva Row since spring 2020. Same equipment, same price tier, but at Lakes Edge you're using the full hour on open water instead of eating into it with a canal transit.

The programs that only exist at one address
If you're planning a date night rather than a family afternoon, the choice gets easier, because Riva Row is the one running after-dark programming and Lakes Edge isn't.
Riva Row's seasonal lineup has included a Moonlight Paddle, a staff-led evening trip along the canal, and Starlight Swans, an illuminated swan pedal boat ride past the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and the Waterway Marriott. In one recent season those ran on scheduled summer evenings at a flat rate per boat rather than per hour. More recently, Riva Row added a Glow Paddle, a staff-led kayak trip through the illuminated canal and around Aria Island, plus a Kayak 101 class for people who want instruction before they're handed a paddle and pointed at open water.
None of that exists at Lakes Edge. It's built for daytime lake access, not evening programming, which is one more reason the two spots aren't really substitutes for each other.
What actually catches residents off guard
The generic version of this post tells you both boat houses are open seasonally and to check the website. What it doesn't tell you is that the listed hours frequently contradict each other depending on where you look, and that Lakes Edge in particular has had real, dated disruptions to its schedule that a seasonal footnote doesn't cover.
In 2024, Lakes Edge closed for an extended stretch after heavy rain damage. When it reopened that October, it came back on a reduced Friday-through-Sunday schedule rather than its previous daily hours. That's the kind of change a resident who checked the hours once, months ago, would never know about unless they happened to catch the local coverage.
A few other rules worth knowing before you book either location:
- You can't rent from one boat house and return the equipment to the other. Whatever dock you launch from is the one you come back to, aside from a weather or medical emergency.
- Dogs ride free at both locations. Life jackets come in sizes down to 0 to 30 pounds, and a tandem kayak is the better call if your dog can't comfortably sit in your lap.
- No glass, no alcohol, and coolers have to fit inside the watercraft or stay in your car. Neither location will hold one for you at the dock.
- Both close for New Year's Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
Given how often the posted hours shift, the smart move before any trip is calling ahead rather than trusting whatever you last read, whether that's a search result, a directory listing, or this post six months from now.
Picking the right dock for the plan you actually have
If the plan is a relaxed family afternoon with kids who want the swan boats, or you're brand new to paddling and want the canal's calmer, more contained feel before committing to open water, Riva Row is the better call. Just budget two hours if reaching the actual lake matters to you.
If the plan is squeezing in real lake time before dinner at Hughes Landing, or you want to be on open water the moment you sit down, Lakes Edge gets you there faster and the walk back to Restaurant Row afterward is short.
If the plan is a date night with lights on the water, there's only one answer, because only one of these boat houses runs after dark.
