The Indoor Circuit: Where The Woodlands' Families Are Actually Spending August

The Indoor Circuit: Where The Woodlands' Families Are Actually Spending August

"When we later realized there was no longer a Gymboree serving The Woodlands area, we were excited to bring that experience back for other families." That's Tosin Fatusin, explaining what pushed her and Amber Harris to open a new Gymboree Play & Music franchise on Kuykendahl Road in Creekside Park West, with an official opening set for August 21.

It's a small line about one franchise. But it says something about the last five months here that's bigger than any single business. Nearly everything that opened in The Woodlands between March and now landed indoors, and nearly all of it exists because someone local had already clocked a gap and decided to fill it themselves.

Four openings, four different operators, one obvious pattern: this town spent its summer building a rotation of climate-controlled places to put kids, and a drive-thru to keep the parents caffeinated in between stops.

The slide park that got here first

Slick City Action Park opened in The Woodlands this past March, months before the rest of the wave. At 35,800 square feet, it's built around 14 large-scale slides, two air courts, a zipline, a trapeze rig and a soft play area, plus a dedicated soccer air court that the brand says is the first of its kind anywhere in the Slick City system.

The owners aren't entertainment-industry transplants. Chris and Mandy Bush spent their careers in finance and energy before deciding to run the franchise themselves, after finding the concept while planning their own daughter's birthday party. That detail matters more than it sounds. The people opening these spaces aren't chains parachuting in on a market study. They're residents who used the product first and then built the supply.

Four stories before the heat gets you

Happyland Playground held its grand opening on August 2, just six days before this post. It's a four-story, multi-level indoor playground built for ages 4 to 12, with climbing towers, netted bridges, tunnels, a white tube slide, four-lane slides and a spiral staircase slide. The snack bar covers the basics: pizza, corn dogs, mozzarella sticks, Icees, Dippin' Dots.

Happyland is positioned as the sister venue to Happyville, which serves younger kids. The split is deliberate. Instead of one playground trying to serve a toddler and a fourth grader with the same equipment, the brand built a second location specifically for the older bracket. That's a business responding to an age gap in its own product line, not to a hole in the market at large, but the effect for a Woodlands parent is the same: one more indoor stop that fits kids who've outgrown the toddler gym.

The coffee run that isn't really about coffee

Waygood Coffee soft-opened its new drive-thru at 3713 College Park Drive on July 15, with a grand opening week running July 20 through 26. The location sits just over the line in Conroe, close enough to The Woodlands that it functions as an edge-of-town stop rather than a separate destination. It's the brand's fourth Texas location, following Upper Kirby, Pearland and Humble.

Founder Auri Jalili described the approach behind the menu before the opening:

"Really hone in on the richness of our flavors and pick out which coffee beans work the best."

The detail that matters for a parent's actual week is the format. Waygood built this location drive-thru only, no seating, no lingering. That's not an accident. It's a bet that the person buying coffee here is already in motion, moving between a Gymboree class and a Happyland reservation, and doesn't want to get out of the car to do it.

The timeline nobody planned but everyone's living

None of these four businesses coordinated with each other. They're run by different people with different reasons for opening when they did. Laid out in order, though, the sequence reads like a town quietly assembling its own indoor circuit one operator at a time.

  • March 2026 — Slick City Action Park opens, the first of the wave
  • July 15 to 26 — Waygood Coffee soft-opens its College Park Drive drive-thru, then holds a grand opening week
  • July 29 to August 2 — Happyland Playground soft-opens, then holds its public grand opening
  • August 21 — Gymboree Play & Music holds its official opening in Creekside Park West

Spread across five months, that's four separate operators reading the same local demand signal without ever comparing notes. Three of the four are locally owned or locally franchised. The fourth, Waygood, is a Houston-area chain expanding outward, and it picked The Woodlands' edge as its next stop after Pearland and Humble.

Why the timing isn't a coincidence

Late June through August is when outdoor plans in this part of Texas get harder to keep, and midday trips to a neighborhood park stop being realistic for a lot of families. That's exactly the stretch when three of these four venues opened or held their public debut. Slick City arrived early enough in the spring to already be a known option by the time the real heat set in. Happyland and Gymboree timed their public openings for the deepest part of summer, when an air-conditioned four-story playground or a structured 45-minute class does something a splash pad can't.

None of this replaces the trail system or the parks that already define daily life here. It's additive. What changed this summer is that a family with a toddler and a fourth grader can now string together an indoor afternoon that didn't really exist as a full rotation five months ago: a Gymboree class for the younger one, a Happyland pass for the older one, Slick City on a weekend when both kids want the same thing, and a Waygood run on the way to any of it.

That's the actual story behind four unrelated grand openings. It's not that The Woodlands got a handful of new businesses. It's that four different owners, reading the same summer independently of each other, built out an indoor circuit that residents can now use start to finish without leaving town.

If you're the kind of resident who tracks what opens and what closes because it tells you something about where this community is headed, that instinct is worth trusting. The Merlo Team pays attention to the same signals for a different reason: they tend to show up in property values and neighborhood demand long before they show up in a market report.
